Gangasagar (Sagar Island) is where the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal, and the Kapil Muni Ashram makes it one of Bengal’s best-known pilgrimage places. From Kolkata the trip is road to the Muriganga river jetty at Lot 8 (Harwood Point, Kakdwip), a ferry crossing to Kachuberia, and road again to the temple and beach. This page helps you pick the right package and understand how the trip works.
Which Gangasagar package suits you?
- One-day trip β leave Kolkata early, visit the temple and sangam, return the same evening. See our one-day tour guide.
- 2-day, 1-night trip β a relaxed visit with an overnight stay on the island. See the 2-day plan.
- Makar Sankranti / Mela trip β special arrangements for the January Mela. See the Mela 2027 package.
- Group, private and senior-citizen trips β see our group and private tours and senior pilgrim guide.
How the journey works
The road leg from Kolkata to Lot 8 jetty is roughly 100 km and usually takes around three hours, depending on traffic and your starting point. The river crossing to Kachuberia takes about half an hour by government vessel, launch or barge. Ferry timings follow the tide and season, so we plan your day around the current timetable β you can check it on our live Local Info page.
From Kachuberia it is roughly 30 km by road to the Kapil Muni Ashram and the sangam. Vehicle arrangements across the river depend on the service and the day, so we confirm them with you at booking.
Pickup points
We commonly arrange pickup from Kolkata hotels, Howrah, Sealdah, Esplanade and the airport. Pickup from Diamond Harbour or Raichak can also be arranged β tell us when you enquire.
What a typical package includes
- AC car or coach for the road legs
- Ferry or vessel tickets for the crossing (as per package)
- English/Hindi/Bengali-speaking support
- Darshan and sangam visit as per the plan
Meals, stay and entry or darshan extras vary by package, so we list them clearly in your quotation. Package prices change with season and group size, so we give a written quote instead of a fixed public price.
Before you travel
- Start early β the last ferry decides your return time.
- Carry a government photo ID, drinking water and light cash.
- Weather, tide or a strike can change timings; keep a little buffer in your schedule.
- Dress modestly for temple visits.
